Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1895. ANOTHER MINISTER
Tiik tailpiece to the comedy of errors played tl|is session by members of the House of Representatives, is a Hill to increase tho number of Ministers and their little emoluments. It Ims been left till the end of the session for an obvious reason, being one of those things that have to be smuggled through when the House is moribund and demoralised. 'The present Ministers are a pretty expensive lot as they stand, and if the House decides to increase their post, there will undoubtedly be some awkward questions asked during tho recess. According to the Ohrldchurch I'm, in the year 1887, Messrs Seddon, Ward and McKopsie, then ju' opposition—fancy free,' 'declared Hint'five Ministers ui a cost of £4,000 a year, were enough to rule New Zealand, but now that they themselves are doing the ruling they affirm that seven Ministers are necessary nl ut cost of £5,800. After ill) seven is a perfect number, and Messrs Seddon, Ward and McKenzie, as perfect cures, may be entitled to claim it. It is also a poetical number, each of the three worthies is a i poet who lias missed his vocation, but who still loses no opportunity of spouting verse in a whalelike manlier. As poets, as bnrds, as gifted lyres, the niimlioi' should be seven! Put readers of Wordsworth will remenibei that in order tu boast that t "wo am seven," it is indispensable that two pf the company should of ' all places, bo in Jieaven, As n variety troupe seven ought to be allowed, for'an iuteilocutor iu the centre, two right mid fovo |eiV lmnd supporters, and two corner men, are almost essential to a decent programme. It is somewhat curious, however, that while more Ministers impeded, the present men cannot, at home in their oliiccs for' a week at a stretch. They find time for touring ■ England, Australia and the Uviwera , country, and possibly what they want ' is some fellow to stop in the Government. Buildings and do the work while {by .enjoy themselves abroad. s The real question tljap oiiglititobe * determined is not whether the pp.s berof Ministers should bo increased, [ but whether the present team still enjoys the confidence of the country. , »o have & grayo doubt on this ; point. i ■ i=3 , The Hon, John the itps.-jOHX McKenssio has ; i, 'and'' 1 called MrR, S. t, MR.s'.'flA.iVKiß, Hawkins, the < !
