WAIRARAPA NORTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tho ordinary monthly meeting of tho Council was held yesterday. Present—Crs Von 6 Reden (Chairman), 11. Jlaunsell, W. H. Becthnni, J. Stuckey, E. Smith, 0. Guild and J. Groves. MINUTES, Tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, TEXl'l i'Oi;.\'ii. Cr Mannsell presented a petition from Te Nui setflers, asking that a pound bo established thoro, and stating that Mr Mannering was willing to act as Pound-keeper. Mrs Owen had yards which would he suitable, if the Council 'would procure them. It was stated that great damage had been done by cattle straying on the roads. , It was vesolved to ask Mrs Owen if she will lease the stock-yard, near Newcombe's, for use as a pound, uuaii to insKixr,rux's. The Surveyor-General forwarded a letter, stating that the road could j not be re-surveyed, but partieuhus of the old survey could be supplied if necessary.—Held over. c\sri,i; I'i'lNT-'IE xn i;oai>. Tho Clerk to the Castlepoint Road Hoard wrote, covering grants fur expenditure ou certain roads in that district, It was resolved to reply, thanking the Board for the liberal grant, Kxi;m;i:i!'s services. The Upper Tancru Road Hoard asked for the services of the County Engineer. The Engineer stated that the work to be dealt with, was likely to lead to litigation, and he had told the Chairman of tho Road Board, that he preferred having nothing to do with it. The plans and specifications had been su modified that complications were likely to ensue. Resolved that as tho plans and specifications were not prepared by the County Officers, the Council cannot agree to the request.
KANAKA I!AY ROAD. Mr Nitz wrote, asking' tlmt the thirds from sections on that road, be expended as soon as possible. It was pointed out that something over £IOO was available and Air G. Ivummer had asked that the settlers be allowed to do the work. It was resolved that Or W, H. lieetliam and the Engineer be empowered to expend the money. A I'IIOI'LA.MATION. Qtt:elle notices covering a proclamation re closing roads in the Kopuaranga District were forwarded by the Lands and Survey Department, Resolved to apply to Mr 11. Kennedy for the cost (£lt>) for closing the road. AD.Jispir.sT or i;iini>Ai;!i:s, The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote re the adjustment of road boundaries in the Akitio and Castlepoint Road Districts. Resolved that the Clerk again apply to the various Boards, for their consent.
KKKfAIUWA DIIiAXKMKXT. From the Railway Department offering £3O towards the repairs to the embankment washed away at Eketahunu. Resolved that the Mutineer's estimate for the repairs (£B3 Ss (id) be forwarded to the Engineer for Railways asking him to reconsider his offer TIIK IE XUI FUlih. Mr O'Connor wrote asking if the Council would lake a renewal of the lease of the right-of way to the ford at Te Nui. He stated that the rent would be £4 per annum. Cr Groves stated that since last meeting he hud a most interesting meeting with Mr O'Connor, who had a very poor opinion of the Councillors individually and collectively, He had proponnded several very novel schemes for rectifying matters. Jle declined to modify his demand for the £9 and held that the £.i per annum should start from the time the road was lirst used. He delied the Council to take the land and intimated tlmt anyone going on the property would have a warm time. Cr Maunsell said that the land used for the road was about an eighth of an acre, and the position severed about three-quarters of an acre. lie did not think it was just to pay the sum asked, viz: —£4 per year for the use of an eight of an acre of land. After Councillors had fully discussed the matter, it was decided to accept Mr O'Connor's offer at £4 for a year, and an agreement to be prepared for him to sign.

The Southland County Council ] wrote re resolutions on the Local 1 Uovermont Bill, but as there bad 1 been no opportunity of considering the Bill it was decided to hold the 1 matter over, USANCE, The Finance Committee's report was read and adopted, ESOIXEER'S REPORT. The Engineer's report was read. Cr Beetham was appointed to make the best terms ho can for the purchase of the road deviation at Bridge Creek. Besolved that the Rorokoko cottage lease stand oyer for the present. That the Engineer have the necessary repairs to the Makakahi Bridge sheathing effected. That the Engineer be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £lO in reducing the grades on the big slip on the Eketahuna-TeNui Road, The report was then adopted. FLOOD DAMAGE. It was decided to forward a copy of tbe schedule of Hood damages to the Minister and Mr A, W, Hogg, with a request for a share of tho Government assistance for this County, and to call attention to the fact that County roads should lavo a prior claim as it is no use opening i up district roads if County roads i are blocked. barton's LINE.
