NEW IDEAS OF FARMING,
New ideas of farming are boing successfully put iufo practice in the United States, A great many fish farms have been started of late. The propagation is carried on in a series of ponds or basins—the first for batching, another for the young fish, and a final one for maturing until largo enough for market. The business yields a good profit. Frog farming has become quite an industry, and is carried on in a similar manner. Most hotels and restaurants in the largo cities are supplied with the Parisian delicacy by those who make frog-raising a trade.
Ostrichfarminghasbeen developed : in California to such an extent as to i control the American market for : plumes, and a large export trade is being worked up. Tho birds are hatched by incubation, and are reared the same ns any other fowls. About two hundred are sold every year at prices ranging from one hundred and fifty to three hundred dollais. The rabbit ranch is ono of the latest schemes of farming in the Far West. Hereafter, jugged hare will have a place on American bills of fare, as several parties have already undertaken to cultivate this game on a large scale. Others, tired of fawning on old Hues, have turned their attention to mushrooms, exclusively. Thousands of acres formorly sowed in grain, are now planted in sugar beets. Some planters in the Southern States are experimenting with tea. Silk culture is crowding out the bees, Ono man in New York State, is devoting a thirty-acre space to raising dogs for leather.
