VILLAGE SETTLEMENTS SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
THE MINISTER OF LANDS' STATEMENT, Received September 24, 10,40 a.m. Adelaide, September 24, In the Assembly the Minister of Lands stated that the village settlements had cost the Government £23,000 and theirvalue was assessed at £35,707, while the villagers assets totalled £41,000, They comprised 5,600 acres of cleared land, ana over a thousand head of stock wero distributed amongst the 1748 settlers,' 1 of whom 11 were unmarried women, and 948 children. He was fully satisfied and entirely gratified with the results and the success of these settlements proved the value of cooperation and greatly relieved tho labour market. A number had been oxpelled for laziness and other causes, but a lot of good settlers had been secured. . Careful observation had proved it was in the best interesjjif the settlements not to give JJne women a voto iu the management, as they were not competent to form an opinion upon tho practical work of settlers.
