SAD FATAL ACCIDENT.
A MASTERTON YOUTH DROWNED,
News reached Masterton last night of a sad fatal accident which occurred yesterday morning, about fifteen .miles from Masterton. jAU-t Appears that William Waite, a sod aged nineteen, son of Mr W. Waite, of the Masterton publieschool, and who was employed by Mr R. E. Homblow, together with four or five others, on his property at Mount Bruce, oxpressed tho intention yesterf day morning of crossing the Ruamahunga River to help a man named John King to bring some stores ] across. King being detained on the Masterton sido by the flooded state of the stream. Waite was warned by Mrs King and a follow employe named Hiscock not to attempt such a thing, but of a determined and venturesome nature, the lad took no notico and eluding Hiscock climbed down a cliff forty feet high, and attempted x to cross the river,
Hiscock arrived at tho top of the cliff just as the unfortunate boy stepped into tho water, and saw him swept away at once. Tho man was unable to render any assistance, and the poor boy, hampered with a heavy ' overcoat, soon sank. news was brought into Masfl&ton about 8 o'clock last evening by Mr Campbell Ball, who, owing to tho flooded state of tho river, had lo make the journey via Hketahuna. Mr Hornblow at once broke the hews to the lad's parents, and they are quite prostrated with the blow. At an early hour this morning Mr Hornblow, accompanied ,by Constable May, started for tho place where tho accident occurred; tho body, at latest advices, not baying been recovered.
