The body of a young woman, packed in a caße, was found on the water-side at Sydney yesterday. It is supposed she died under an operation by an unqualified surgeon, who, becoming alarmed, had thus ondeavored to dispose of the body,

Thos. Meredith Sheridan, a chemist, principal of the British Medical Institute, and another man named Edward Thomas have been arrested at the Institute rooms in connection with the Woolloomooloo mystery.

Detectives have discovered that tho box was purchased at a city warehouse on Saturday morning, and have traced it to Sheridan's rooms, where, it is alleged, a number of instruments have been seized stained with blood, and giving other indications that they hayebeen used in tho nefornianco of an.operation. Tho signs of the recent presence of a decaying body were also found. Tho body of the victim lias been iudentified as that of Jessie Nicholls, aged 23, the unmarried daughter of a farmer residing at Mulgrovc, near Windsor.

At the inquest, the mother gave evidence that the daughter left her home on Tuesday morning, with the alleged intention of posting a letter and never returned, and her later movements were unknown.

A man named Seawall, and a woman named Sarah Jackson, have been arrested on a chargo of complicity in the crime. Miss Nicholls had been engaged for two years aud a half to a young fanner, who was prospective heir to a rich uncle, and the latter had threatened to disinherit him if ho married the girl, Previous to leaving homo, she asked to be allowed to visit frionds in Sydney, The mother objected, and hid the clothes to prevont her going- T'lio girl was only chessed in a wrapper and underclothing when she left.

After her disappearance, the mother went to tho girl's lover, who said he was responsible for hor daughter's condition. She had gone to him the previous day, and said she was going to the city to hide hor shame. He offered to marry her, but she refused.

Mrs Nicholls came to Sydney on Thursday, and ascertained that her daughter had stayed all day with her friends, procured clothes, aud left under pretence of returning home. The woman Campbell or Jackson states that a certain operation was performed on Miss Nicholls on Tuesday last, and the girl died on Friday. She informed Mr Sheridan, the President of the British Medical Institute, who went upstairs to see the body, and ripped open the abdomen to ascertain tho cause of death.

The mother of the girl Nicholls is in a state of utter collapse, and grave fears are entortained for her reason, Her condition is serious indeed.

Sheridan has already served a long sentence for an offence of similarnaturc, this was about 10 years ago, when ho was convicted at Darlinghust Court on a charge of boing connected with an illegal operation, and sentenced to ten years imprisonment. He has not been out of gaol very longi and occupied a place in Elizabeth-street, for a few months only. Judging by the instruments, drugs and documents found in the' place, illegal medical business of an extensive nature, has been conducted there.
