FOOTBALL.

[By Damocles.]

The Wellington School "rep" team defeated the Wnirarapa boys on Saturday by 17 points to nil. Wellington beat Auckland on Saturday by nine points to live. J. Kelly, Swindloy and 11. Kelly scored for the winners, and Absolom for the losers, the hitter's try beingconverted, Great interest was taken in the match, and the play was the best witnessed in Wellington this season.

The Bed Star Club hold their annual social, to wind up the season, in the Drill Hall ou the l!>th inst. Mr F. Butement has been elected Secretary, and will receive the help of nn influential ladies and gentlemen's Committee.

There was no practice of the Wairarapa " reps " on Saturday, and their seems little hopo of our men making a decent stand against Wellington on Saturday week. Owing to thelukc-warmness displayed by the Union and the players generally, the interest taken by the public in the fixtures will not be so manifest as in preccdingyeurs. If a practice cannot be arranged, it is full time the probable team was chosen, so that the individual men may obtain a chance to get into form.

" Quidnunc " of the Canterbury Times writing on the ■ WairarapaCanterbury match says: The visiting team struck mo as a good lot who were handicapped by want of knowledge of each other's play and lack of combination, This trait was very apparent in the first spell, when a lot of good individual play was put in by the Cardinal and Blues, but very little symptoms of combination were noticeable. After the interval though, the visitors got well together, and gave the home team all they wanted. The great and strongest point about tho Northerners was their excellent all-round tackling. Forward and back they would hu hard to beat in this department of tho game, and to their especial excellence in this lino may be attributed tho fact of Canterbury only breaking through upon exceptional occasions. 1 was favourably impressed with tho play and demeanour of the visitors, and am confident that had they had the chances of several practices together they would prove thcmsolves foemon worthy of the steel of any of the provincial teams.
