SERIOUS FIRE AT HAWERA.
LARGE DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY,
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. Msssages received by the Secretary of the Post Office, report thj£-|-an alarming tiro broko outat Hajj4|& at 1 a,m.
The Postmasterthere, telegraphed —" The Egmont Hotel, Commercial Hotol, and several other places, are on lire. Havo lmd the roof of the old Office, put out twice. Don't expect to bo able to savothe now Offico. If no communication is sent in the morning, you may expect both destroyed."
At 9.34, the Postmaster at Wanganui wired that tho Postmaster at Hawera reports tho new Post Office, Courthouse, and fourteen other I buildings have been burned down.
Later. A further telegram from Hawera, states that both sides of Princessstreet and half of High-street havo bcondestroyed, including theEgmont and Commercial Hotels, Loan and Mercantile Office and eleven other premises, including the new Post Office, new Courthouse, and buildings adjoining the Bank of Now Zealand, Tho damago is estimated at forty thousand pounds.
The Postmaster saved part oUfr telegraph instruments, but about (rTOchains of poles and wires hayo been destroyed, and will tako two days to repair.
