FOOTBALL.

WITH TEE WAIRARAPA "HEPS." By Telegraph.—Special, CußiSTcnimcH, Friday. Tho match Wairaiapa v. South Canterbury, attracted the largest attendance on record, The visitors were strong favorites, but Canterbury placed a strong team on tho field and 'proved au equal match. Garrard, of Christcliurch, made a splendid referee. In tbo first spell Canterbury had the advantage, but uover looked dangerous, the Wairarapa backs displaying powerful defence. The visiting forwards were too strong in scrum and obtaiued the ball on every oocasion but always mulled in transmission among backs, Emmett missed two places for goals.

Thompson in ono opportunity sailed past all bis opponents but was caught from behind in dodging tho full back.

Woon, Watson, Hudson and -Mitchell, narrowly escaped scoring, but the combination was poor, and passing imperfect.

Canterbury obtained a pretty mark opposite tho Wairarapa goal, but Dockery managed to touch the ball before going ovef the bar, thus saving a certain score. In the final half spell the yisiting forwards made affairs sultry, and the pjay was continually 011 the line, and it was hard luck not scoring.

The game ivas good but trifle rough, Udy, Ross, Booth, Cochrane, Woon, and Wrjgley receiving rather severe injuries, the two latter! aro very lame, and it is improbable will be able to play on Saturday. Maguire played half in the second spell, which made a wonderful difference.

the team had a great send pff from Timaru, after the match, where it was treated most hospitably. They arrived at phristchiireh' at nine p.m.

Cannot hope for fyictpiy on Saturday, owing to the injuries to the team, and the lack of scoring men which is very apparent. The team is very sound on the defence, but Canterbury is confident of placing a large Bcove.-
