TE NUI NOTES.
From Our Omi Cvrnipndtnt,
Tlio lVhareania footballers played a team from Jlowewood last Saturday and defeated them by nineteen points to nil. Tries were scored by I''. Johnston (2), E. Nicholls (1), and Jus. Owen (2), only two being converted. ' The visiting team wero not as strong as reported, and therefore our boys had rather an easy win, Play commenced at '6 o'clock, Tenui playing with the wind. Soon after starting, F. Johnston scored a try for Tonui, N. Owen converting The match on the whole was very amusing. The barrackers mustering in full force, and I must say they were very impartial in the " barrack." I cannot mention any of the To Nui men as deserving special merit in the great match, but I would like to impress upon them for the future, uot to take things quite so easy. In the evening the visiting team wore "dinnered" atliost Owen's. Several songs wero sung by quo and another, ana on the whole I think overybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A great deal of amusement was caused here on Saturday night by two " would-be" niggers, dressed in " the latest." . They were promenading tlio cliiof street, one with tni " accordcon," and the other with a " constant scroamer." They gave an entertainment about ten o clock, and what with their peculiar ways and sayings and their delightful'got up, thoy presented an amusing spectacle to their audience.
The eathquake here last Saturday was very mild, but was felt by most people. An enquiry into the burning of the Mungapakeha School is to be held in the Magistrate's Court here 011 Friday, 23rd inst. I hear some startling ovidence is to be brought forth. Our eagle-eyed constable has been parading the streets looking for the necessary "six lawful British subjects." Ho passed me. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here between one and two o'clock on Wednesday morning, It stopped several clocks.
