WORK IN THE MAKURI WILDS.
WAGES HAVE RISEN.
l'liero is any amount of work to be had in this district at present at reasonable wages, Workmen arc scarco and wages liavo risen in consequence ; it being impossible to get an ordinary labourer under twentylive, or twenty-seven shillings and sixpence per week. While men who liavo a knowledge of stock can command thirty shillings per week, in some cases even higher wages are paid to good men ; who say they can make two pounds per week clear, at the co-operative works in spite of tlio high charges for stores. We are inclined to believe them, knowing that on one or two places in the district the " boss " is doing the work of three ordinary men, not bowiusotlieylike shivery, but because with hundreds of acres of logs and scrub to clear, sections to fence and rabbits to keep down, and getting no returns with slock at its present low price, the " boss" does not sleep soundly unless he is dead tired. The winter has been exceptionally mild, stock have done better than was expected, the death rate being considerably lower than last winter, THE STITCH IS TIME, Rabbits are increasing. Several young ones have been caught, making us dread the summer, with thousands of acres of Government bush lands handy for breeding grounds, and so far no steps liavo been taken to abato tho nuisance, •'UKKT'M.
