A fkati'kk of the lino Km:cti:icity new residence shortly fo bo creeled :it Gas, Ijiinsdowne for Messrs
Maunsellllros. will be the institution of mi electric light system—lho lirstin lliisdistriet-thc dynamo of which is to be driven by mi oil engine. Electricity as ut lighting medium has come very much to the front of late, ami the present intended introduction of it into the Wairarapa, will probably prove but the forerunner of many future installations in station homesteads and the larger residences ontsidothe circumscribed area, where gas is already available. Perhaps it is hardly generally known tlmt wlicn it becomes a question of lighting a town, eyen of the most modest proportions, it is cheaper to erect an electric plant, then to build gasworks, and that the cost of construction and the expense of maintenance are both rapidly becoming smaller: indeed, it may well be regretted that Masterton—especially with the complications that have latterly arisen from time (o timedid not, when it bad the opportunity, leject gas and favour the electric light. However, Carterton, Greytown and Featherston can profit by our experience, and when they munch out into the adequate lighting of their respective boroughs, they will, if they havo any regard for good results with a moderato outlay carefully consider the claims of electricity to preference. We have m Australia examples of several townships quite as small as' any of these, successfully catered for by Corporation Electric Works with distinct advantage to the townspeople : the street lamps are brilliant to a degree, and put the miserable apology for street lighting in Wellington, for instance, completely iii the shade; while as regards the
illumination of interiors, those who use electricity, find it effective, safe, and decidedly economical on the conditions under which it is supplied in our sister Colonies.
