MASTERTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

♦ . ADJOURNED ANNUAL MEETING. The adjourned annual meeting of he above Socioty was held in/lr V, G. Beard's office at 8 p.m. jE erday, Mr J, Tucker occupying the hair, and about a dozen members ieing present. AKNUAL JtEPORT, A committee meeting was held irevions to the annual meeting to ■eceive the report and balance sheet. The minutes of the last annual < neoting were read by the Secretary [Mr T. Gillespie) and adopted on ihe motion of Mr D. S. Papworth. The report and balance sheet for tho year showed a balance of assets over liabilities amouutt to £27 lis 4d, tho Bank balance™ June Ist being 16s 3d, with cash in hand £7 lis 3d, and subscriptions and special prize money unpaid amounting to £l2. On the motion of Mr Papworth, seconded by Mr Collotte, the report and balanco sheet were adopted. ELECTION 0V OFFICERS. The following officers were elected: President, Mr W. H. Beetham (reelected); vice-Presidents, Tucker aud Dr Butement wo re-elected, and the election of a third yice-President Was left over, Tho following Committee were electad:—Messrs T. C. D'Arcy, Archibald McLeod, Chapman, J. Candy, Grnschow, W. Simm 6, E. Collotte, H. Broom, senr., P, Murraj, J. Stono, E. Halo, D. S. Papworth, f T. Gardner, and \Y, Gillespie, Mr T. Gillespie was re-elected Secretary, and Mr J. Carpenter Treasurer. Mr T. C. D'Arcy was elected it member of the Society. THE LADIES. Mr W. Gillespio thought it would be to tho advantage of tho Society if they obtained a number of lady members, and elected t, Committee , of ladies, Mr D'Arcy suggested that the Secretary canvass for honorary lady members, and form a Committee from the samo, without tho benefits of ordinary membership. Mr Papworth said, if this courso were adopted.rulo VI, would ameuding. Rule IV. at presents vided that a Committee of ladies could bo formed. Mr Halo suggested that tho matter be left over, the Secretary in * the meantime to obtain information its to tho working of tho Wellington Socioty, Mr Papworth thought the difficulty was, that although ladies were not debarred from general membership, many did not care to bocomo general members, becauso of the subscription. The questiou appeared to be, were they to admit laJios under special terms. It was decided to adopt this ) course, on tho motion of Mr P. Murray, seconded by Mr Chapman, tho subscription to bo 5s for ordinary mctnborship, and 10s for honorary membership, or half the present subscription for male members. tub kiii.es. Mr W, Gillespie seconded tho motion, which was carried. GENERAL. Mr Tucker suggested that a class might bo opened for cage birds; canaries, parrots, and tho like. Messrs Papworth, Carpenter and T. Gillespio were appointed a revising committee to amend the rulos in accordance with tho resolutions just ' passed, Mr P. Murray moved that tho Secretary apply to tho Agricultural Department tor a supply of tho various pamphlets issued by tho Department, Mr Papworth said the pnmpblets wero to bo obtained at tho Stock Office, but some of them wore unfor. tunatoly out of print. Mr Carpenter complained of certain press comments on tho Society's 4 position, He thought they ought to refutethesestatements, ThcSocioty was financially as sound as over, Votes of thanks were the retiring officers, the auditor, aV Mr W. G. Beard for the use of his office, Mr Tucker replied on behalf of the retiring officors. Mr Papworth thought the Society was quite justified in applying to tho Town Lands Trustees to make a grant to be devoted to prizes for the ' best kept cottager's garden. Messrs D'Arcy aud Halo spoke in favour of this, and it was decided to approach tho Trustees on the matter. Tho Secretary was instructed to endeavour to arrango with the Town Clerk for the uso of tho Council Chambers for meetings. This boing all tho business, the meeting closed with tho usual voto of thanks to the chair. 1 '1
