FOOTBALL
[by hamocms.]
To-morrow, the last of the Senior Cup lixttues are to be played, Masterton meeting Carterton, at Carterton, and Grcytown and lied Stars, at Masterton. ff Grey town prove victorious in their contest, the Wairarapa Championship for the season will be won, and the Banner will be relegated to the southern warriors, until 18%. But it is quite within the range of possibility, that more hard ami interesting matches will be witnessed, belore Mr Whatman's ti'ophy is allowed to leave this purl of the district. The excellent form shown by the Stars in their match against Masterton, last Saturday, has made them strong favorites in the minds of local enthusiasts, and if the weather holds out, and the ground is left in its present slate, it is thought they will prove more thana match for the redoubtable Greytownites, If Masterton and the Stars win both their matches, three tennis will be equal, and the final fought out between them. Of course these calculations may bo upset in various ways, and nnforseen circumstances arc continually cropping up in football, which place any team under serious disadvantages. However, I have no doubt- the match to be played on the Park Oval tomorrow will create just as much interest as the one of iast Saturday, and it is to bo hoped both teams will be represented by their strongest selection, and a rattling trial of strength will lie the result.
The members of the Bed Star leam are particularly requested to meet at the Committee Booms at two o'clock to-morrow, in order that the photographer may bo interviewed.
All the available drags, buggies, and horses in Grcytown aro under engagement to-morrow, to convey every football enthusiast for miles around to the scene of action. The colors of both teams will be flying gaily, and I hope everyone will be satisfied with the result.
The Grcytown Club have asked tho local team to accept Mr Card as referee for the match to-morrow. Although it must be acknowledged that Mr Card is a splendid man in that position, it is rather severe on our local authority of the rules—Mr C, Pratt-who has acted in all Masterton matches during the season, and has in all cases given entire satisfaction to all concerned. A more impartial referee that Mr Pratt would indeed be hard to find in the district.
A line little match attracted a lot of spectators to the Lansdowne Ground yesterday, the competing teams being the Violets and the Second White Stars. The result was a victory for the former by 9 points to five, Sutton, P. Corbett and Wellington gaining tho tries for tho winners, and 'l'insley for the losers. Although the White Stai s were much heavier than their opponents, the Violets had much the best of the game, and their forwards in the scrum worked really well in sending tho ball out time after time to the backs. Langton played undoubtedly the best back game, and gave his three-quarts™ plenty of work throughout, C. Corbett, at full, also played a plucky gamo.
