FOOTBALL.

[by damoclks.] '; A large number of people were ' attracted to the Oriental Ground at Lansdowno on Thursday to witness , tho match between the two local . junior clubs, the Orientals and White Stars. The former Club have for many years held the sway among junior teams in this district and had gained a reputation, the effect of which debarred them from competing in the Thursday Union fixtures. The result is that the j Orientals have become weakened and r the accepted Club, the White Stars, li strengthened so much that the S latter are now quite a match for the ' J reputed invincible Orientals. The ° White Stars have only been formed this season, and it reflects great . credit upon their coach, and the members generally, for tho fine and correct work indulged in by tho team as a whole. A deal of interest was taken in the meeting yesterday, and although the Orientals had not their full strength in tho field, they soon found out that the Stars were worthy 0 ' of their steel, and they had all they 0 could do throughout the game to keep the younger Club from scoring The Stars certainly had the best of ■ the game, which was stubbornly and fiercely fought from beginning to end. The matcli ended in a draw, and the next meeting of the teams will be looked forward to with renewed interest. Mr T. Wrigley officiated as referee. The result of the game only shows tho utter absurdity of theofiicials of the Thursday Union who refused admittance to a team that had to fight hard to avertdefeatfromanotherClubof the » same town that was accepted without the least demur. The " Southern members of the Union are defeatiug their own end, as by barring the Orientals, they are placing the Stars head and shoulders above any other junior team in tho « Valley, and the interest taken in the Championship contests is therefore very meague. Another great game is promised for to-morrow on the Park Oval, , irben the Masterton and Red Star teams meet for the second time. The j last contest ended in a draw, and p both teams are again confident of 6 showing their superiority on this C occasion. The Star team is precisely V the same as at tho last match, but ai the Masterton fifteen has been considerably altered since that occasion, Both teams are now in tho nick of form, and a fast and furious spells will doubtless be the order of the day to-morrow. * A meeting of tho Red Star Club willheheldat thoir rooms to-mor-row evening to elect a now Seiretary, w'w Mr Fred. Butement, who has adeipro.tem. since the beginning of the season. Mr Butement has °. been a, most energetic and capable ° officer, and his services will be greatly missed by the Club. p The Violets defeated the Feather- ti ston Frothors at Carterton yesterday by 17 points to nil.
