The Tiiapeka Times says—As a result ottiiclate snowstorm, no less than 500 miles o! telegraphic lines were broken down in Otnfio. There were forty-three breaks between Lawrence and Eoxburgh, ami twenty between Lawrence and Milton. Yet, such was the iirompt nnd energetic manner in which the authorities set to work, thas no public inconvenience worth speaking of was experienced, the connection being completed in every direction within a remarkably short space of time. ' A London journal has the following respecting our premier:—"One of the most remarkable Scotsmen in New Zealand is the Hon. H, J. Seddon, the Premier. He is a big man, and is generally reported to be able to use his lists on occasion, lie sneakes forcibly and with a strong Scotch accent. He receives £IOCD a year as Premier." It is an old joke that Scotsmen claim every man who has made a name for himself ai a countryman, but we have not seen any claim set up on behalf of Mr Seddou. Scotsmen leave the glory of him to Lancashire. As for (lie ''strong Scotch accent," that man must have a vague notion of the dialect who takes Mr Seddon's accent as being that of any part of Scotland, adds a contemporary. A dance under the auspices of the Maslei'lon Masonic Lodge was held last evening in the Drill Hall, all the arrangements being carried out most elaborately, and the Hall being very tastefully decorated, under the able direction of the worthy Secretary, Jlro. W. Sellar. The floor was in the best of condition, and a lengthy programme of selected dance music was played byliro. A. von Keiseuberg's full orchestra, and gave the most complete satisfaction. The supper table, loaded with tlic good things provided liy the caterer (JJro. J. Yfirkens), was a perfect picture, and could not have been improved upon. The night was exceedingly cold, and onlookers felt it badly, but those present who were dancing spent a very pleasant evening. The annual report of the Directors of the Permanent investment and Loan Association of Wnirarapa, to be presented at the meeting of shareholders, which takes place at Greytown on Monday, July Ist, reads as follows:—Your Directors have again the pleasure of presenting a balance sheet of the usual satisfactory character.
