A largely-signed petition was forwarded, praying the Council to erect a lamp at the corner of Queen Street and William Street, and another praying that a lamp bo erected at tho corner of Dixon Street and Worksop Road. Cr Feist moved that the prayer of tho petitioners for a lamp at the corner of Queen and William Streets, ie granted, He thought the request B reasonable one. Cr Hessey thought that an offer had been made by Mr Bennison to pay for the gas, if a lamp were erected, conditionally that he be \
allowed to advertise on it. ' The Clerk pointed out that Mr Bennison did not want the lamp in the same place as the petitioners, Cr Hessey moved, as an amendment that Mr Benr.ison's offer be accepted. Cr Hornhlow said Mr Bennison merely wanted an advertising medium. The lamp at the comer would be more suitable to the general public. Cr Hessey contended that a lamp half-way clown William-street would be more useful than a lamp at the corner of Queen-street. The Mayor said without wishing to be an obstructionist, he would just call attention to the fact that by giving this lamp they would find numerous other applications for lamps before them. Cr Hessey's amendment was lost. • The Mayor then moved that the application be referred to a Committee to report on at next meeting. Cr Chamberlain seconded the motion, and it was carried, the second petition being dealt with in the same manner.
