ORDINARY MEETING.
A, 'Hiho regular fortnightly meeting wftho Mnsterton Borough Council was hold last evening. Prcseni —His Worship the Mayor, nnd Crs Hessey, W. Ferry, Yates, and T.Wngg. IIIXUTKS. The minutes of lust meeting were read and confirmed. AimOWKS. Apologies were received from Crs Cullen nnd Mutvie, for absence from the meeeting, Tho Mayor said Cr Mutrie had nsked him to apply for leave of absence for two months.—Leave was granted.
nUCMXEP. The Secretary of the United District Charitable Aid Board, wrote • rcquestiiiEf payment of an account | for legal advice, incurred by the Board with reference to the Borough contributions. It was decided that the Council wild not acknowledge the liability. A REQUEST.
W. Bcdmond wrote asking tho Council to do something to tho channel in front of the Queen's Hotel. The matter was refcired to the Works Committee. COUKIV AND KOllOl'flll. The Clerk to tho Wairarapa North County Council wrofewith reference to the payment of the Borough Council's share of the cost of repairing the Waipoua Bridge; asking for a bill of particulars of the Borough's claim, and further stating that the Council delegates had agreed to make no retrospective claim.
The Mayor said it was coniinry to fact tbat they had agreed to make no claim. £tt was resolved thai the mailer do left in the hands of the Clerk and Mayor, to try and arrange amicably.
MR WOOHIiOOFFK's CIIIMXEY. With reference to Mr Woodrooffe's chimney in Hall-sheet, the .Borough Surveyor reported that two inches of cement hud been put on, and the chimney was now safe. Mr Woodrooft'e was present, and explained Hint be had erected the chimney in ignorance of the by-laws. His experience bad shown him tbat many chimnies had been erected forty feet high with the same thickness of wall as he had used. However, on learning of his mistake, he had done everything he could to remedy it. He was sure the chimney was now as good as any in Masterfon, and the chimney was now only half-an-inch under the stringent measure. Through life it had always been his object to build on a solid foundation, and he had done so now. The bricklayer was present and could bear out what he said.
|frho Mayor said that Mr Russell, ™ Borough Surveyor, bad beard at last meetiug, Mr Woodrooffe's letter read, stating he had covered the chimney with two inches of cement. Mr Russell then distinctly led the Council to believe it was not satisfactory and now reported it was. He considered he had been misled by Mr Russell. Mr Russell said he did not remember the wording of the letter. Or Hesse}' said he did not know what use it was if the Borough Surveyor, to whom they looked for guidance, told them a thing was right one week and wrong the next. The Mayor said Mr Woodrooffe's application was now before them. He would like to hear the Council's opinion. Crs Yates and Hessey saw no reason why they should depart from their previous resolution. Finally on the motion of the t'or, seconded by Cr Yates, it was lved to inform Mr Woodrootfc that Mr Russell's explanation could not be accepted, and the Council would require Mr Woodrooifo to conform with the By-law regarding chimnies. On the suggestion of Cr Hessey, it was decided to publish a special notice with regard to the size required by the By-laws for chimney workMr Russell also reported that a cottage now being erected in MichaelDixon Street, be allowed to be put up with a chimney of less size than the By-law required, as the cottage was isolated, Also, that the Council in future take the responsibility of collecting the Borough Surveyor's fees. It was resolved to inform Mr Thompson (to whom Mr Russell's report alluded), that the Council would require the By-law carried the question of dealing with Mr Russell's request re fees be left over until next meeting, KISAXCE, Tho Clerk reported that the Finance Committee meeting had lapsed last evening for want of a quorum. Accounts as submitted were passed for payment. a rainy, Cr Pony was appointed amember 1 of the Worksand Finance Committee and authorised to sign cheques. HATH. The Mayor gave notice of motion that a general rate of Is in the £, and a Library Rate of Id for the current year, payable in one instali menfc in September, be struck oyer the whole Borough. On the motion of Cr Yates the Council then adjourned.
