FOOTBALL NOTES.
ORIENTALS v. PARKVALE, / (By Damocles). Who first championship match under the Thursday Rugby Union between the above teams was played on the new Oriental Ground at ? Lansdowne yesterday, and resulted 1 in a very hollow victory for the Masterton team by 36 points to nil, " Parkvale had a poor show from the c start, tho Orientals fairly romping J over them in every point of the ' game. The play was not of a very extraordinary nature, the difference between the teams not calling for any special brilliant play on the part of the Orientals, and the j defence of the Parkvale men being *; a poor display at football. Tries s were scored by A. Bennett (2), c Marsh (2),Bagge,B.Bennett,Siitton, 1 Leach and Harland, three of which were converted. Marsh also dropped a goal from a penalty kick. Mr G. Hansen acted as referee. STARS V. FEATIIERSTOX. The White Stars journeyed to ' Carterton to meet tlio Featherston • fthers, and anotherone-sidedgame • llted in a victory for the Master- , lads by 33 points to nil, As far ■ as could be ascertained theprincipal scoring was dono by Bowser, l''itz- : simmons, Sheppard, Hockley, and Richards. SCHOOL V. VIOLETS, A very exciting and interesting match took place on the sch oof ground yesterday, between the Violets and the School. The School won by four points to three. Carpenter obtained a mark and Reside placed a pretty goal, 'l'insley scored a try from a rebound, but Williams failed in the attempt at goal. Tho victory was a woll earned ono, and although tho Violets had tlio weight this was more than compensated for by the excellent combination of the school. On tlio school side, Reside must be singled out for special mention, his kicking, collaring, and passing wore faultless, and lie made a capital skipper. Ho was ably supported by every member of his team, a notable characteristic of each boy's play, being unselfishness. For the Violets, Corbett, Williams, ■Dixoir, Mason, and Tinsley, showed *ood form. Mr A. E. D'Arcy gave every satisfaction as referee. STARS V. MASTERTON. The great match between the Masterton and Star teams is causing considerable excitement among
onthusiasts, and tho Park Oval ehould present a very interesting appearance to-morrow. Both teams lmve a host of admirers, and the game is almost certain to be a grand one, from all points of view, especially if the present lino weather continues, If the full strength of the Clubs are at their post, there is little to choose from either side, but ovon 0110 absentee will placo his team in severo straits. The ground will be kept clear, and all spectators are requested to keep outside tUo Oval fence. Admission will be charged to the Grand Stand. " May tho best team win " is the liopo of every true enthusiast. What will certainly bo tlie best football ground in Masterton is that recently acquired by tho Oriental Club at Lansdowne. Tho field stands high and dry at all seasons of tlio year, and with plouty of room on all sides, is very level. Tho Club is to be congratulated upon obtaining such an excellent field for sport.
