TOWN LANDS TRUST ELECTION.
THE TOWNHALL CANDIDATES RETURNED. Very considerable intorest was taken yosterday in the election for three Trustees on tho Masterton Town Lands Trust, to take tho places of Messrs Daniell, l'eist and 11 P. Lett, the first two stauding again, and Mr Lett retiring as he has left the district. Towards evening tho number of voters increased largely, and the Returning Officer (Mrlt. Brown) and bis deputies were kept busy, Owing to the fact that two papers were issued —one for tlio extraordinary election, to fill Mr Lett's seat, which was contested by Messrs Hessey and E. E. Chamberlain, and a tecond for the two vacancies, for which thcrowcre four candidates—some confusion occurred, and the number of informal votes was unusually large. The Town Hall question was made
.tho point at issue, and tho result mhowed plainly the feeling on the and that a very considerable portion of tho voters must have gone straight for the three Town Hall candidates. At about a quarter past sovon, Mr It, Brown announced tho result as follows ORDINARY ELECTION. C. E. Daniell 354 li. E. Homblos- 302 E. Feist '2:)!) W. Frngncll 135 Messrs C. E. Daniell and R. E. Ami: Tin: i'oi.i,. Mr C, E. Daniell, in returning thanks for the honor done in placing him at tlio top of the poll, said it was certainly a proof that his actions in the past, while a member of the Trust, had been watched and approved, and he hoped to bo able to still retain their confidence. He could not close, without just alluding to a dodger circulated by the candidates opposing the platform on which lie had stood, in which the voters were asked " to vote for men with clean hands, who had no a.xe to grind." He was sure the voters had dono so in returning the men they had, (Hear! hear! aud cheers), He could not help, however, wUft'ing that he was tliorWgbly surprised to see two of tlie names on the dodger, as bo thought these gentlemen were above that sort of thing. In conclusion lie would ask the voters to at once tell him when he did a mean action, and he would resign, (Applause).
Mr R. E. Hornblow returned thanks for his election. He said, that although not such an "old hand " as some of his opponents, he would do his best, as he had in other local bodies to which he had been returned, and at the end of his term, they would find he had done all lie had promised.—(Applause.) Mr J. Hessey briefly returned thanks, and promised to do his best in the interests and welfare of the town. Mr E. E. Chamberlain thanked those who had voted for hiin, and although defeated assured them he ms not discouraged, Ho was ■posed to borrowing for tho Town Hall, and had fought tho election on that ground, His opinions had not altered, and if lie came out again it would he on the same ticket. (Applause.) Mr E. Feist said he was satisfied with the decision of tho voters, bnt still was of opinion that the proposed borrowing would be a mistake. He would propose a hearty vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, Mr Pragnell not being present Mr Hornblow briefly thanked his supporters, and seconded the vote of thanks which was carried, and the crowd dispersed.
