THE MAORIS AND THE LIQUOR QUESTION.
Bji Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. During the recent Maori Parliament at Rotorua, a petition for presentation to the Premier and ftjlianient, was drawn up, asking twe a clause bo added to the Licensing Act, that no intoxicating liquor be sold or given to any man of the Native race, and no license 1b renewed or fresh license be granted, witbin a mile of Maori land, A large number of Maori women present, drew up a similar petition in their own behalf. Resolutions were also adopted and entrusted to Mr Hone Heke to bring before tho Government, deploring the effect of drink on the Maori race, and appealing to the Premier to prohibit, in the now Licensing Bill, the sale and supply of liquor to Natives, as is at present in the three Licensing Districts of Taupo, Waiuku, and Moawhango, the petition being signed by 30 chiefs and ovor 60 other representative Natives from all parts of tho country.
