BUTTER.

Aiikuidh, May I
The Minister of Agriculture has received a report from Mr Young, the butter oxpert in London, in which he says a trial of strength between Continental and Australian butter is inevitable, but it is genorally considered that tho stall fed cows of the former will bo unable, in tho long run, to compcto with the grass fed animals of Australia. Ho strongly impresses upon exporters, tho necessity of soiiding the host and uniform quality of butter, properly branded, aud in regular shipments, He disagrees with tho suggestion to establish provincial distributing centres, and explains that all tho large distributing firms have head centres in London, with branch agencies in the provincial towns, all of which aie within a few hours' rail of the Capital. It was therefore practically impossible to glut the London market, unless every town in tho country is in a similar condition, but it is easy to glut provincial markets, which are thus placed at a disadvantage.
