FOOTBALL.
[BY DAJIOCI.KS.]
Anolhoi' very successful practice was hold by tho lied Stars, on tho Oval on Saturday, a picked fifteen defeating about twenty remaining members of tho Club. The losers woro hardly strong enough to make an even game, but the match was very interesting from a spectator's point of view, and some line passing rushes wore witnessed Several new men donned the jersey, nnd quite upheld tho reputation that had preceded them. Ross played coolly, and ran and passed with lino judgment, For tho losers, young Coote, as three-quarter, displayed excellent form, and, in my opinion, qualified himself for a trial in tho seniors. With good men to feed him, he should make a useful man. Robinson, Randall, Coote, nnd Pike, were others who played hard and well for their side, The picked team, with one or two alterations, will again play nll-conieis on tlie Hospital Ground, next Saturday, after which the final teams will be chosen to represent tho Club in the championship matches. Eketahnna now supports two football clubs. The new-comers are the Rivals, and jn playing the senior team the other day they only sustained defeat by three tries to one. The football writer in the Carterton Observer says:—"Mr Jeffries' notice of motion to come before (lie Union next meeting is a clean sensible one Tho motion sets out that no player shall be eligible to compete in cup matches, unless a bona jkk resident of the district for six weeks, The revising of this rule will lessen the templation of Clubs that compete for the championship this coming year to import and accommodate competent players from other towns that caused so much illfeeling and wiangling in the past seasons. If tho mulion is let pass we shall have fair ami square going between Wairarapa clubs."
The Melrose second team aro to be invited to play the 2nd Stars in Mastertou on the Queen's Birthday. A debate, " Is Football Overdone," will take place under the auspices of the Mastertou Mutual Improvement Society at the end of this month. Mr P. Rollings takes theallirmativeaud Mr 0. Pragnell sticks up for the game. Footballers should roll up in force to " barrack" for their side. The Parkvalc and Mastertou Orientals will play a lest match on on the Carterton Reserve on Thursday next,
The Red Star Annual Social is to be held on the iMth inst., and promises to be quite as successful as its predecessors, always one of the most enjoyable dances of tho year. The teams of the Melrose Club (Wellington), who play against the local bam, are to be invited to attend. Mr G, Hansen has been appointed Secretary, and with a strong Committee of ladies and gentlemen, will, no doubt, do his utmost to bring the result out on the right side.
Several new playing members were elected by the Red Star Club on Saturday night, including Agnew (late of the Mastertou Club), Ross, of Rangitikei, Randall, Cootc, and
Fellingliam. There are now sixteen Unions, representing 21)0 football teams, affiliated with the New Zealand Rugby Union. Auckland Union heads the list with 57 teams, Otago next with "rt, with Horowhcnua the lowest with four teams,
ilr Phil Hiickctt, who played for the Pahiatua Club during lust senson, is now playing for the Makatukn Club in the cup contests of the Waipawa Rugby Union. It is probable that the Stars will have the strongest back team this season than for many years past, both in the first and second fifteens. With Agnew, Wrigley, Jlcna.ll, Boss, D'Avcy, Cootc, Jackson, Tyke, Thompson, Owen, and Hansen in the Club, and others of moie or less note, an excellent selection should be made. The forwards will.in all probability, be a fast lot, and will rely more upon the speed than upon weight. There is, therefore, every prospect of a successful season foi the Blacks.
The Queensland representative team will visit New Zealand in August, commencing their tour of the Colony at Auckland, They expect to bring the best possible team the Colony can produce, and will endeavor to retrieve their laurels. The following team will represent the Masterton Club against Carterton on the Park Oval on Saturday next the 11th inst:—Sullivan, Thompson, McGoyern, Johnston (Featherston), Broad, G. Johnston, Mowlem, Gray, Holyoake, Emraett, Gillis, Fowler, Anketell, Leach, Johnston. Emergencies—Jumbo, P, Cowen, W, Johnston,
Poneke defeated tho Athlcticß in Wellington on Saturday by one try to nil, and the Potone-Melroso heat also resulted in a win for the former by the same score—three points to nil. Lang, who represented Taranaki 1 last year, and played such a great game against the Canterbury team, iB now in Wellington. Ho will probably play for the Athletics. ' The following will represent the Star first fifteen against the remaindor of the club next Saturday:— Agnew, Boss, 11. Wrigley, Kenall, W. Thompson, Tyke, Handall, T, Wrigley, Morris, Kemeni, McKillop, Stone, Doughty, Cochrane, Frank Dorset.
