LAND FOR SETTLEMENTS.
PURCHASE OF 10,000 ACHES AUTHORISED.
Ministers were engaged in Cabinet yesterday considering tho recommendations of the Land Purchase Boards of Auckland and Canterbury, Several estates in Canterbury situated between Temuka and Waikara, and one estate in the Auckland district situated between Whakafano and Euatoki, were recommended for acquisition, and in each case Cabinet approved of the recommendation. Negotiations will therefore bo opened up for the purchase of these estatos at tho prices suggested by the Land Purchase Boards.
I The total area of the Canterbury properties is about 6000 acres, arid tho'estate between Whakatano and Buatoki lias an area of about 4000 acres. It is called Opqrio, and a melancholy history attaches to it. Ai young man not long out from Hornlf bought it, and shortly afterwards, while put shooting, he'was accident? ally shot with his own gun,and died from the injuries he received. Cabinet also authorised the expenditure of certain votes, the most notable being £Goofor a Courthouse at Stratford and £IOOO for a bridge over the Rangitikei at Otara.— N,?i, Times.
