ST. MATTHEW'S SUNDAY SCHOOL.
„ y> ENTERTAINMENT.
St. Matthew's Sunday School was last evening crowded with a very large audience to witness the first of a seiies of entertainments it is proposed to hold during the winter months. The initial effort of the promoters was highly satisfactory, the various items being received with such applause as to show that they were highly appreciated. The programme opened with an overture splendidly played by Hiss Pearson, after which the curtains weredrawn, revealing a pretty tableau, entitled " Poor Old Joe." An ir.visiblechorus, and the limelight effects, enhanced the picture, and the " angels" had to appear again before the audience was satisfied. Mr Meadows next appeared, but tho over-powering smoke from the preceding tableau greatly marred the excellence of his singing' MissOlly Jagosang "Tired," in a very pretty manner, and Mr Cyril Winders rendered "The Mighty Deep," in his usual line style. One of the most appreciated items on on the programme was a duet, " The Lilliputian Quakers," by Master Pete and Miss Hilda Corbett. These little people sang anil acted their parts to perfection, and had to respond to a decided encore. That ancient and highly-amusing farce, "Box and Cox," was again brought before an audience, and the characters, having excellent delineators in Messrs Porter, Nops, and Beere, caused great amusement. The programme was concluded by a "Shadow Pantomime," in which a bevy of Chinamen wero the conspicious figures. Tho amusing antics of the performers created intense fun for tho children present, who were kept in continual laughter, Great credit is duo to Miss Corbett, and Messrs R. Brown and 0, Beere, who were the principal promoters, and their next entertainment will be looked forward to with considerable interest,
