THE CHITRAL CAMPAIGN.
(Received, April 1(5, 1.20 a.m.) Calcutta, April 15. A detachment of Sepoys, in an attempt to cioss Panjkora River to reconnoitre, were compelled to retire, one British ollicer being killed, and two wounded. The disunities among the Sepoys numbered 17. The Sepoys wore separated from the main body owing to tlio enemy destroying a pontoon bridge by means of floating enormous logs down the river. The British forces while retreating inflicted heavy loss to the enemy. A friendly chief, Dir Khan, has sent 2000 men to relieve Dr Robertson at Ohitral. (Jolonol Baltyo was killed, and there were a few other casualties oh tlio British side. Colonel llaltye was killed just as the detachment regained tlio camp. The Khan of Dir has captured the fort of Dir and taken Umra Khan's brother JJaliomed, a prisoner. He intends to give up both to thoj the English.
