FIFTH SPOKTS MEETING.

Splendid weather prevailed for the above Sports yesterday, the attendance being better than at any previous meeting. All the officers worked hard, and the arrangements

woro cau'icd out as woll as possible. A number of the races were closely & contested, but several of the events » were very tame, owing to ths largo number of nominators who failed to start. Bagge's running proved a regular surprise and bo literally "scooped the pool." The cycling events proved a '' good thing " for Herbert, who apparently frightened nil other competitors out of the field. Gibson, however, rode a good race in the 5 miles event, but was never in in it, McGovem made a game effort to win the Bracelet, but Bagge's form was too good and the trophy was carried off by him. Some good music was supplied by the Municipal Firo Brigade Band, which contributed a good deal to the afternoon's enjoyment. The following are the results : Maiden Eace, 100yds.—1st heat: L. This looked like a walk-over for .};• Herbert, but Gibson of Palmerston North, although not entered, rode with him, having 240 yds start, Won easily. Hal&mile Handicap. A good finish resulted between Dorset and Ankete 11 ,Anderson coming up too late. Five Mile Bicycle Handicap.—T. L. Herbert, scr, 1, A. B. Gibson, 280 yds, 2, Time, 16min 53sec. Herbert won easily, Gibson being the only other starter. 440 yds Ladies' Bracelet Handicap.—(World's Amateur Record—--47| secs-N, Bakes, America. New Zealand Amateur Record—so 2-sth «'W.T. McPherson, N.S.W.) H. .Bagge (25yds) 1, F. McGovern iißyds) 2, Scale,Jeffries,Anderson, Butement, Skeet, Mandel, Nicholson, and Dorset also ran, Mandel obtained the lead soon after the start, but was passed by Scale, "who in tarn was passed by Bagge. McGovern came with a great rush and amidst great excitement took first place, but live yards from the tape was again passed by Bagge who just managed to breast the tape, the finish being excitingly close, Time 54 seconds.

Consolation.—Seven entered for this raco,L. Riobards winning on tho tapo with Buteraent n good socond and Owen third.
