MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The regular fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Hornblow, Hessey, Hughes, Yates, Cullen, Wagg, aud Chamberlain. MINUTES. Tho minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. WAIPOUA BRIDGE. The Clerk to the WairarapaNorth County Council wrote with reference to the vesting of tho Waipoua Bridge in the County, and enclosing a lettor from the Under-Secretary suggesting that an arrangement be made, fixing the contributions of the Borough and County formaintenance of the Bridge, on the basis of the last three years' valuation. Tho Mayor thought it would be as well to appoint three Councillors to meet tho members of theCouuty Council appointed to deal with the matter, On the motion of Cr Cullenit was decided that any three members of the Works Committee be appointed to meet Crs Stuckey, Guild aud Smith to confer on the matter,

PETITION. A petition was received from six' carriers asking an amendment of the Borough By-laws by striking outth# clause, allowing 401bs of luggage to be carried with each passenger by passenger conveyances, and also that these conveyances be prevented carrying parcels,

Cr Hornblow said he had been asked to present the petition, and, therefore, would move that the matter be referred to the By-laws Committee.—Carried, hospital WELL. The Secretary to the Hospital wroto asking to be allowed to übo the fire engine to pump out a woll. Permission was granted on tho usual terms. A MISTAKE, Messrs Norbury and Trevor wrote askingthe Council togrant £soabovo their contract price for the gas tank, as amistake of 100 yards of concreto had been made in their calculations, entailing a loss of about £l5O.

Cr Cullon said ho would like His Worship to lead tho Council in this matter.

The Mayor Gaid he was qujto prepared to do his duty to all concerned,

Cr Hornblow said the contractors were not amatours, The loss was unfortunate, but he thought if they had made a mistake they should abidobyit, He would moyo that the Council regrets that the application cannot be entertained, Cr Yates seconded the motion,

Cr Cullen said speaking as a practical man he might say that he had made mistakes and had to abide by them. He was not in fayour of any grant being made, Cr Hornblow's motion was then put and carried. REPORTS. The reports of the Gas and Library Committee wore adopted, and accounts as recommended passed for payment. 1 NUISANCE. Cr Hornblow said he wonld like to call the Counoil's attention to the fact that rubbish, in the shape of scrap-iron, etc,, was being deposited at Kuripuni, It was decided to draw the attention of the Inspector of Nuisances to the matter.

Cr Hughes said, while on this matter, he shouldlike the attentionof the County Council called to the fact that rubbish-including broken bottles in large numbers—was being deposited in the Waipoua River, at the ford near tho bridge. THE FIBS BNOIBE. Cr Hornblow said his attention had been called to the fact that the Custodian of tho Fire Engine was away last Monday, and ho would like to know if anyone was in oharge. Tho Mayor said enquiry should be made, but ho thought someone had been temporarily appointed. I Cr. Hughes said Captain Pickering was most attentive to theso matters, and he felt sure that tho mattor had not been overlooked by him. tenders. 1 I The tender of Mr M. Kerrins for the Villa-street formation was accepted. On tho motion of Cr Cullcn the Council adjourned.
