AjlOXfi the .secret missions of a semiofficial character, upon which the Hon. J, Ct. Ward was despatched to London, not the least important, it is rumoured, is the demand, on the part of our Government, for an explanation of the absence of New Zealand from the New Year's Honor list. To this end, the peripatetic Joseph was to have had an interview with Lord Kipon, last week. The "now democracy," like the " now woman," will have what is considered her " rights," and Ward will pound Lord Bipou into recognising these rights. It is not unlikely, therefore, that the Birthday Honors, which follow upon tho 24th of May, will see benighted New Zealand favoured with another Knight. Sir Joseph Ward, or Sir Richard Scddon, will look well on paper, but the odds arc in favour of Sir Joseph, ho being on the spot, and expounding the " new financing " of the " new democracy" may catch on, and do the trick as Sir George Dibbs! (lid, not long ago, obtain the ribbon from Her Majesty herself, To prevent jealousy and a split in the party Mr Ward may seek to obtain honor for n Now Zealand Liberal, in that case it is alleged he will plead the cause of Mr Leo Smith, our representative at the Ottawa Conference, a personal friend to whom he is bound with tbo strongest ties of binder twine. No explanation 'is given why tbo Liberals should seek to monopolise the gifts from the Crown, and their menials, the Labour party, go unrewarded.
