Whatman (in tho chair), and some dozen members. Tho Secretary, Mr H. Perry, read the minutes of tho previous meeting, which were confirmed. Tho now members proposed and elected wens:— Messrs W. Johnston, J. Boddington, C. 11. Holyoako, Sullivan, and J. B. Ennnett. Mr McGovcrn, in introducing Mr Holyoake as a new mombor of the Club, said that gontloman had captained the Wellington College team throughout the season 1894, for which team he had done excellent service, and had no hesitation in saying that Mr Holyoake would be found a welcome addition to tho Masterton Club. The Chairman said lie was pleased to welcome Mr Holyoake into the ranks of the Masterton Club. The election of ollicers resulted as follows Patron: Mr E. M. D. Whatman; President: Mr A, W, Cave; rice-Presidents: Messrs C. A. Pownall, J. Hessey, H. Holmes, C. Bannister, J. W. and \V. Perry, J. Macara, Rev. J, McKenna, and Hcrr A. roil Keisenberg; Captain : Mr F. McGovcrn; vice-Captain: Mr J. W. Mowlem; Secretary: Mrll. Perry; Treasurer: Mr W. Broad; Matcli Committee: Messrs A. D'Arcy, W, Watson, and R, Gray; Delegates to Union: Messrs H. Perry, A. D'Arcy, and F. McGovern; General Committee : Messrs W. Broad, R. Gray, J. Boddington, and A. Anketell. The Chairman, referring to the election of a new Captain, explained to the meeting, that owing to the fact of Mr D'Arcy, the late Captain, being undecided as to whether he would take any active part in the Club during the coming season, it was the duty of the members present to secure an official head for the Club, as the season was near at hand. Their late Captain (MrD'Arey) had skippered the Club in a vcrv able manner and with credit, and he (the Chairman) was sure that the election of a new captain would be accepted by him in a true and sportsmanlike spirit. As for Mr McGovern their new Captain, he could only say that no man in the Club I worked harder or did more in coaching the Club during last season than Mr McGovern, and he felt satisfied that the new Captain would fill his office with credit. (Applause), Mr McGovern said lie esteemed the honor conferred upon him, and felt sure that if tho members would only turn out to practice a little more during the coming season, the Club would still maintain its old position and past high standard. He ' also thanked the members for elect- ' ing him as their skipper (Applause). ! It was proposed to open the . season on the 20th of April, if tho i ground is in a fit condition.
In reference to securing a part use of the Park Oval, the Chairman said lie was of opinion that the best course to be pursued, was at once, if possible, to come to some amicable understanding with the Star Club, regarding the joint use of the Park Oval during the current season. The new code of rules issued by the Park Trustees, had thrown a somewhat different aspect on intended arrangements, but, 110 doubt, if Joint Committees of the two Clubs were appointed to discuss the matter, it was very probable some definite and satisfactory arrangement would be come to. It was moved and carried, that this (the annual meeting) support the decision of the special meeting held in February last, " that the Worksop Road ground be sold, provided the Club secure a part use of the Oval," Messrs D'Arcy, Mowlem, and H, Perry, were appointed Delegates to confer with the Star Club Delegates, tc the Park Oval, and also to act as a Committee of Management, if terms are arranged. A motion was carried, urging the Union Delegates to recommend the formation of 11 Referees' Association, the expenses of such Association, if possible, to be borne by the Wairarapa Rugby Union. Mr McGovern urged the Club to keep a second fifteen going in the field, during the next season, and to encourage their matches, also to arrange a match for them with some foreign club, if possible, next Queen's Birthday (May 24th), the fifteen to elect its own Captain on the field.
These remarks were endorsed by the members, and the meeting adjourned after the usual votes of thanks to the chair and retiring officers.
Mr F. McGovern has been elected captain of the Masterton Club. The genial" Mac" deserves the position, and the old club is extremely fortunate to have such a popular and efficient player at the head of affairs. I hope the members, both young and old, will rally round him and endeavour to uphold the high reputation the club lias gained under the regime of those sterling sports, Messrs Whatman and D'Arcy. "Billy" Roberts, one of the best three-quarters in Wellington last year, lias thrown in his lot with the Petone club for tho ensuing season. The Ponekes will feel the loss of Gage, Wymvard and Roberts in the back division this year, although they have plenty of young material to select from. There is also a chance of Gage returning to Wellington if called on by his old club. " Crom-a-Boo," tho Hobens' new football song is becoming quite popular. Hope they won't overdo it. We know what happened to that soulinspiring ditty, "After the Ball not football. The song is for sale in Masterton. Who'll be the first to sing it in public ? The following officers have been elected by the Paliiatna club for the ensuing season: Patron, Mr J, Hall! president, Mr G. Bottomley; vice-presidents, Dr Gaultand Messrs Breeds and G. H. Smith; captain, Mr Cashion; vice-captain, Mr M. Wood; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr E, Lewis; general committee, Messrs Skinner, Wood, Hackett, Vile, and Baillie; selection committee, Mr Baillie and tho captain; delegates, Messrs Caslnonand Lewis; auditors, Messrs H. W. Briggs and H H. Knight, " Tony Cashion, an old member of the Red Stars, is the new captain of the Pahiatua Club, and as an energetic and capable player, should prove tho right man in the right place. Maurice Wood, who served his apprenticeship with tho Greytown Club, is the vice-captain elect. More interest appears tobeevinced in football matters at Picton this year, and tilings look altogether brighter than for the last fee seasons, ,
There is some talk of a mixed Red Star team taking a trip to Nelson at Easter, playing two matches at Nelson and ono at Picton. They would he certain of a real enjoyable trip, I am glad to see tho Masterton Club have takou tho initiative re forming a Wairarapa Referees' Association, and with Mr E. M. D. Whatman at the head of affairs, football matches should become more popular than ever. Old players who desire the sport toadvanco should lose no time in sending in their names as willing to act as rcforcos at cup matches. Tho Orientals hold thoir annual meeting in the Empire Hotel tomorrow evening. A meeting of the Management Committee of tho New Zealand llugby Union was held on Saturday evening, at Wellington. Correspondence was received from Queensland, respecting tho proposed visit of the Queensland team to the New Zealand Union, during the coming season, and it w:is decided to extend a cordial welcome to the visitors. It was reported that the Auckland Union representatives would tour Now Zealand, visiting affiliated unions, this season, and that tho Wellington Union would also go South.
