AUTUMN MEETING, President—A. W. Cavo; Hon Treasurer— A, A. Elkius; Judge—C. I?. Vallance; , Siarter -A. A. Elkias; Handicapper—J. jn E. Henry, Clerk ot Scales—T. Shaw ; "W Timekeeper—J. Muir; Clorkof Course— William lotus j Stewards—Messrs A. Walker, E. E. Chamberlain T. D. Thorny•en, C. Cowpor, H. Yates, W. Cameron, W. Hawke, W.H.Buick,T. E. Chamber, lain and W J. Hirschbcrg. fine weather prevailed yesterday, although the wind was rather high, and the attendance at tlio MastertonOpaki Jockey Club's meeting was fairly good, many visitors from Wellington and the Lower Valley being present. The racing throughout was good, all the liehls being largo, and some foully good horses competing. Favorites seldom got home, and in one or two instances the public commented very unfavorably on the running of certain lioiscs, but as the Stewards took no objection nothing can be said, One opeudisputoregarding the ownership and running of the hack Slaiden, caused a little excitement but the J affair was patched up in some way, and the horse started by Mr Wi Ilutaiia, H. Reed lighting out the best finish of the day with him, the sludge declaring it a dead heat between Slaiden and Scrip, the latter cleverly ridden by Armstrong, who also managed to bring Royal Tar home a winner in the Handicap Hack Race, his backers receiving the comfortable dividend of .(.' !'> ■«. The principal event —St. Patrick's Handicap—was won by Legislator, his popular owner, Mr N. Grace, being congratulated all round. Mr E. H. Wnddingtou, the Secretary, and his assistant, Mr T. C. D'Arey, were kept busily employed, but nevertheless, found time to give every information to the press, and to courteously attend to the many enquiries of owners and others. All the officers did their best, Mr A. A. Elkins kindly undertaking the onerous duties of starter, no regular starter having been appointed. Before. next meeting, the Club should certainly look round for a thoroughly proficient man for this important office, as it is unfair to expect perfect starting from even the best men, unless they are constantly at it, and are fully alive to all the Wricks of racehorses—and jockeys. generally who support race meetings, should be studied in this matter if race meetings are to be a success. Possibly by next meeting the Clnb may make arrangements to have starting machines in use. The Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade's Band, under Bandmaster Candy, gave several excellent selections on the lawn in front of the Grandstand, their efforts being much appreciated. Mrs Rayner had charge of the luncheon booths and provided a substantial lunch, while good liquors were dispensed by Mr F. Hiley of the Tauherenikau Hotel. No accident of any sort accurred to mar the day's sport, and drunkenness and rowdyism were conspicuously absent. The following arc the details of the racing
