A RUSSIAN PROJECT.
Melbourne, February 22, A novel method of establishing a fired trade between Russia and the lustralian colonies is contemplated by a syndicate of Russian merchants, says a press correspondent. It is thoir intention to fit up a vessel as a floating exhibition of the various ' products of that country which they think most likely to meet with a ready sale in the colonies. The 'tween decks will bo arranged as sample'rooms, and the lower holds will be fitted with an assortment of the goods represented, which they hope to sell on the spot. These will consist, amongst others, of lubricating oils, Russian tobacco, silk goods, liops,caitdlcs, kerosene, tar, fish,twmo, rope, Russian leather, ironmongery, steel, flax, bristles, soap, tallow, varnish, etc. The floating exhibition will leave the port of Revel, on the Baltic Sea, as early as possible this spring, direct for Außti-alia.ancl Melbourne will probably be the first port of call. If the venture proves a success, other vessels will bo despatched fitted up in a similar nianfkr. Itis presumed that Australian roducts will be taken in exchange, ttnd Mr Vladimir Behr, tbe acting Russian Consul, says the projectors of theschemoexpressgreatconfidence that by tbe means indicated a direct trade will eventually bo established between the two countries. After disposing of its cargo, the vessel will proceed to VJadivostock,' and the only.' doubt the Russian Consul appeara to have of the entire success of the undertaking iB the difficulty that may be experienced in ebtainjng cargo for that port.
