Wairarapa Daily Times [Established 1874] FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1895.. THE DUNEDIN SPEECH.
I'm; Christchureh Ministerial speech his boon followed by tbc IJimedin ■lhiistei'iiil speech, ami it must bo dmilted that Mr AlcKenzio had less rouble in securing a vote of contilenco in the administration than Air Jeeves. Still, there was a hostile eelingeven at the Dniiedin meeting vhieh tends to show a change in mblie opinion. Air AlcKenzie is ■egardeil usually as a sincere and veil-meaning man, but as an adniiiistratoi' he has been a failure, and t is good intentions, rather than hif luestionablo perfoimauco which enHires for him it certain degree ol ■cspect. The lirst portion of his tddress was ;i defence of numeral!: ippointnienls of friends and reinjives to the Public Service, but uftei ill he had to extenuate nilhei than to deny his culpability. Hi: jxeuses somewhat resembled that el i certain young woman who wjici taxed with a serious indiscretioi pleaded that "it was only a littli one." The main indictment agaius him is that ho has muddled mos' matters which he has taken iu hand The Horowhenua block is one of hi fiascos, ami he promises a Roya Commission on this subject, but thi is rather an expensive method o covciinga palpable blunder. Hi Cheyiot estate is a white elephant &nd his Pomahaka purchase a scan dal, but still ho maintains that nl these ventures are profitable to tli Colony, although every business mu: in the Colony condemns them There is no arguing with Mr Ale Kenzie, who holds that the Bank o New Zealand loan, the Advances t Settlers Act, and the Consols Enact menfcare non-borrowing measures [/ike Jlr Reeves, ho is 'in eniliiisias who yearns for more legislatioi to carry out his bobbies. Of all tb Ministers, JirScddon is the one wlr is most omb'ued with common souse and who now recognises that some o ibis colleagues are riding their hobb; Swrses too far. In the coming sessioi the question will bo ns to whethe members will back Mr Seddon o support zealous, but indiscreet Minis ters like Messrs Eeoves am McKenzie. Mr MoKenzifi, in hi Dunedin speeeU, .openly ridiculei what he was pleased to call tin the sacred rights of .property, Ni doubt, every pickpocket and s,ptale iiiithe Colony will endorse sucji sen iiments", still, wo believe, there is ye loft a majority in the Colony whicl wiU stand hy the ten commandment riAhev tium Mv McKetme's ravisei edition of them. Heaven holpNov Zealand ii Socialist Reeves are to m/e it? Dei tidies!

Mr W. ('. Buchanan has made the discovery that Ministers supply leading journals with full and authentic copies of their speeches, and rather chaffs (he K. 'A. 'Hints, which on a recent occasion, desired to put Ihe burden of a blunder on to the shoulders of an innocent and non-existent newspaper reporter. The member for the Wairarapa, though a plaiu man, seems altogether too smart for the inspired Ministerial journal.
When ti prisoner is condemned lo solitary confinement in Brisbane, i scorns his cell Ills him like a grave, excepting that he tan stand up in it Being below ground in sonic gaols the place has a sepulchral flavour, and all lights being excluded the impression is that of being buried alive. No sound is allowed to the gloomy, restricted chamber; no human voice is ever heard hut your own, ami this is morn calculated to frighten llian to cheer you in the stillness. The constant fear of going mad, combined with the weakening effect of a regime of lircad and water, is perhaps the most terrible feature of this order of punishment.
H wc arc to credit the Vicuna Pmsc, (Up Mikado is desirous of Laving a European daughter-in-law, and is seriously thinking of asking the hand of some European princess for the Crown Prince. The different Japanese Ambassadors at the European capitals have been ordered to look out, If a princess cannot be found, some daughter of a noble house would do; if that is impossible, a rich American heiress would not be despised. The Crown Prince of Japan is only seventeen years old, and is not to marry until he is twenty, so there is plenty of time. The future bride will be allowed full liberty as to religion. As the Japanese royal house can show an unbroken family tree of kings for more than 2000 years, no objccliou can be made by European princes as to the pedigree of the royal suitor. At the Mastcrton Horticultural Society's Show, yesterday, Mr E. H. A clergyman writes to the Otago Daily Times, pointing out that the word "dissenting," which had been used in a paragraph in the paper in reference to churches, ought not, in the Colonies, to be applied to churches that are not cpiscopally governed. Here, there is no Stale religion, and consequently there is no such tiling as "assenting" or ''dissenting." The Church of England has its place with the other churches, and is neither higher nor lower Hum them.
'' Woomcra" (oils the following story in the Australasian :—Although pony racing is not ijuitc as moral as church I rallies, you can win money at it if yon I know how. The instructions were carried out, and the pony won. Afterwards the backer asked the jockey the reasou for all the mystery and detail. " Well," ho said, "you sec I was put up by the owner, who didn't want to win; but instead of trusting me lo pull him, as a decent cove would, they gives him two buckets o' water 1 know'd he could win even if he had the Yau Yean inside liim, so I just goes a llutlcr on me own, It'll learn 'em to act honest with a cove next time."
