Ol'i: local contemporary declares that it is exceedingly strange that we never attempt to criticize Mr Merrier when be is in the district. This statement is altogether erroneous, but it would perhaps be better if our local contemporary, who has helped Mr Merrier a good deal in his Wnirarapa mission, would refute some of the criticisms which from lime to time have appeared in our columns. Kor example, nearly a year ago we pointed out that no return of the amounts collected by Mr Merrier in this district was presented at the annual meeting of the Worker's Union, and in the interests of the contributors we asked for an c.vpla- | nation. This explanation has never been given, and perhaps our contemporary, who has identified himself with the Mercicrmission will furnish if. Also bo might explain why prominent men like the Minister of Labour and the Member for this district, although pestered by Mr Merrier to back him up from the public platform, have refused to be identified with him. Practically Mr Merrier plays a lone hand in this district, and be is to be pitied if his only friend here cannot find a word to say in his defence.
