AccoiiDixe to the New Zealand 'times a report lias reached tho Labor Department that an endeavour is to bo made to have thelieenseof ahotel at Otaki transferred to a building in close proximity to the Stale Farm at Levin. The Minister for Labour has therefore given instructions for one of the officers or his department to appear before the Licensing Court for tho district to protest against anything of tho sort being done, as there arc obvious reasons why the people whom the State Farm is intended to benelit should be kept at a distance from the bur traffic of ahotel It seems lo us that the Government, in this matter, have given themselves away. If there are obvious reasons why a bar should not be opened near a Stale farm, there must be obvious reasons why a bar should not be opened nearany farm. Why should Government employes be protected, and other employes be left undefended. The Government should either rule that all public-houses are noxious, or withdraw ils special objection to the one proposed to be started at Levin.
