MONTHLY MEETING, , The ordinary meeting of the above Council was hold nt (lie County Office on Thursday afternoon. l'rcsent—Crs Von Hoden (Chairman), Maunsell. Hnndysidc, Groves, Stuckey, E. Correspondence was read from the Borough Council re the repairs to the Waipoua bridge and also a petition sent to that body re the same from certain residents. A written explanation regarding the above matter, was here read to the meeting. Tlio Engineer was of (lie opinion that the repairs would be better completed by ityy labor, and lie selected Mr Daniell, considering him to be best j able, under the circumstances, to carry! out the repairs aud in the shortest possible lime, as he had a large number of efficient hands in his employ, The Chairman explained to the meeting that if Hame were to be atlached to anyone il would have lo fall upon himself,as the Engineer had only acted upon his instructions, as it was considered lo be a mutter of urgency. No doubt a little inconvenience was caused through tlie illness of the Engineer and himself. t Cr Stuckey considered that under the circumstances the action ot the Chairman and the Engineer was the best that could have been taken. Cr Smith said the petitioners wished lo draw the attention of llie Council to the fuel, that under the Aet regulating contracts for all works over a certain stated sum, the proper course would have been to call lenders. As for himself, he was perfectly satisfied with the way in which the work had been done, The Chairman's motion was seconded by Cr Coekburn-llood, and carried unanimously. 1 - AIR lIENT JSIU. Gray wrote, asking for a refund of 10, expenses for removing certain limber on the Upper l'ori road. It was proposed and carried, that the Clerk write to instruct Mr Gray, thai this Council could not make any refund, and advising liim to refer the matter to the l'ahiiitiia County Council. A letter was received from the Public , Works Department, in reply to an application for £250 tor damages to the road near Ekelalnmn, stating Unit a sum of €25 would be granted by the Department, if the Council saw' fit to accept the sum, us a recompense for any damage done. The Chairman said the heavy work and carting, for the railway co-operative works, had all been done iu the winter, 10,000 feet of gravel being carted, besides iron, timber, and other material. All the available gravel had been scooped out of the river at the only place where it could be easily obtained. Still, he supposed half a loaf was better than none, and lie would propose that the Government's generous offer of €25 lie accepted. Cr Cjekburn-Hood seconded, and the motion was carried. MAUMCEVILLE I'OUXD. On (lie recommendation of the Manriccvillc Jioad Hoard, Hemming Xeilson was appointed poundkeeper at Mauricevillc. A TUBK.VT. C. Wilson wrote threatening proceedings against the Council,unless a deposit, alleged to have been lodged with a tender, was at once refunded. It was resolved that the letter he laid on the (able. TOM,. Henry Woods wrote asking a concession on the toll charge at Tcnui, as he had lo pass to and from to his work. Phillips waited on the Council with reference to certain disputed accounts between himself and (lie Alfrcdton lioad Boafd. The Clerk placed a statement before the meeting showing Mr Phillips lo be still indebted lo the Council lo the amount off:) lis Id. Mr Phillips said he had no objection to pay a just rale, but he thought he ought to have been paid the balance due to him. Cr Smith said he had interviewed Mr Phillips, who promised to send in particulars of his claim. _ A statement was put in by Mr Phillips claiming for expenses aud other matters, £31175. Cr Guild said he had gone into the matter aud would recommend that Mr Phillips be giyen £8 4s 9d iu settlement of all claims. Mr Phillips said he had been badly treated by the Alfrcdton lioad Board, but he had nothing against the Council and would accept the settlement olTcrcd. A molion to this effect by Cr Smith was then carried. H.VANCE. The Finance Committee's licport was , read and adopted. OENEHAL. It was resolved that the amount of i Mr Claridgc's claim be paid upon the ; Engineer's certificate. Itesolved that the alteration of the | Akitio lioad District boundary question stand over till next meeting, Cr Handyside to bring the matter before the 1 Akitio lioad Board. • The Engineer's report was read and i adopted.
