THE PRICE OF MEAT.

[to thk edixoh.]

Sir,—Your leaderette of Saturday last referring to the exorbitant clmvgcs mutlo f Oi'meat by tlie butchers of this town, docs you credit, and was not written without going properly into the minutest detail of the subject ill every way. But lo 1 and behold, there is one magnanimous individual in this town—C. Hughes, butcher—who takes you to task in yesterday's issue over the said leaderette, and endeavours to show (in (i very lame manner) that you do the local butchei'sau injustice by quoting the prices you did. To extract a sentence from 0. Hughes' letter, he says: "My prices for meat, for the last six months, have been '2id for beef, and for mutton, up to id for prime joints." How ever C. Hughes, butcher, can have the effrontery to publish such a statement beats creation ! I should like to ask, Sir,wliy lias C. Hughes, for the mutton and beef lie quotes at 2|d, charged me 4d ? Why, I have proof that he has charged Gd per lb. cash for beef steak obtained from his shop, and when confronted on the subject, he merely ejaculated that the charge j was perfectly consistent with stun- j dard prices. For the six months just i past, 1 have never, minnyonenccassion, paid less than Id booked for : any sort of joint of his 2id meat. ( Perhaps C. Hughes will explain why ho charges his customersthese prices and—by letter only—advertises half rates '< Trusting you will favour me by inserting this in your open column.—l am, etc., < W.M.H.
