TENUI NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A Saturday. U'lie inquest on tho body of 11 r John B. Osborne, who died so suddenly, was held on Thursday, at lieCandlish's Temperance Hotel, Whakataki, before li P. Johnson, Esq., J.P., acting Coroner, Messrs F. G. Mangnuson (Foreman), R. Owen, 11. lauvson, A. Groves, A. Mason, and A. Southey, were on the jurv. was given by Mr McCandand Mr Pull, to the effect that tuey, in company with deceased, - were gathering "pipies" 011 the sands at Castle Point, 011 the day previous, when tlicy heard a thud, and, on looking round, saw that deceased had fallen 011 his side, rolled over on his hack, gave two slight growtis, and died. Mr I'nll stated that he had known the unfortunate man seven years, and that he had frequently complained of pains v in the region of his hcait. Mr Whitehead, who had been an employe three years, also gave evidence to the same effect-. Dr Dawson stated that ho examined the body of tho deceased whilst laying at the hotel, and that lie was of opinion
that death was due to heart disease. 1 It appears tlmt he had rheumatic fever some years ago, and had since suffered from chronic rheumatism. The funeral took place on Friday in the Tenui cemetery, Mr B. P •lohnson officiating in a very impressive manner. There was a large attendance of settlers. , ki warning to new chums who are le»ing the mysteries of bush life ! .lo.iii Jones, a new arrival in the Colony had a narrow escape to-day. lie was cutting scrub with a slasher when lie cut his knee very severely, wmfining him to his bed. Ur Dawson attended liim. It is very hard , on the sufferer seeing that he has but just arrived and recently obtained employment. The Mnngapakeha School is to be opened next week. A picnic is to bo held to celebrate the occasion. The Tenui School children have been invited. A narrow escape from an accident occurred to-day, through the presence of mind of Mr J. Smith, a well .known local wrestler, Mr Mackenzie's buggy was standing outside the W.F.C.A. store, the Fole occupant being a little boy, when the horse suddenly started at a smart trot, lint before lie had gone far, Mr Smith seized the reins and brought it to a standstill.
