TEMPERANCE ITEMS.
A recent veport of the British Consul at La Itochelle sheds light on the liquor mystery :—"The owners of vineyards complain bitterly of the small price offered to them for their wine, and the local newspapers plainly and openly state the reason for it to ho that the process of making Cognac out of beetroot and potato spirit has reachod such a| degree of perfection, that the wine of this district, out of which it used to be made, is no longer necessary," The Massachusetts House of Eepresentatives has passed to second reading, a Bill allowing tho cities and towns of that State* to adopt I the so-called Gothenburg system of' dealing with the liquor traffic, Temperanco mon, throughout the State, are actively taking sides for and against the Bill, and an intensity of feeling is being developed, not exceeded during the agitation in 1889, for a prohibitory amendment to tho Constitution, Chairman Blackmer, of the Massachussetts Prohibition Committee, has resigned his position, owing to the storm,of protests which his tenative support of the Gothenburg Bill has aroused among Prohibitionists. The Westminster Gazette says : " The advocates of Temperanco may at length congratulate themselves on tho accession of Royalty to their cause,. Prince Oscar, tho secowhiod
[of the King of Swedon, has just established a Total Abstinence Society among the soldiers of the garrison of Carlskrona, _ The Prince, w> is a total abstainer, has accepted the I presidency of tho society,"
