NORTH WAIRARAPA LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.
THE RABBIT ACT.
The usual weekly meeting of the North Wairarapa Liberal Association was held on Monday evening, Mr C. Hughes occupying the chair. The evening was devoted to the discussion of the Rabbit Act . A number of sottlers and pastoralists were present by invitation, The unanimous opinion was expressed that wire netting was the only effective method of dealing with the rabbit pest, and that settlers could keop their rabbits separate just as easily as they could keep their horses and sheep separate. If the" Fencing Act" was so altered as to compel settlers to erect rabbit proof boundary fences, there would be little necessity for the present Rabbit Act, with its unjust and drastic provisions. After considerable discussion the following resolutions wero carried unanimously: (1) "That this meeting direct the attention of Parliament to the gross injustice done to settlers, by the rigid enforcement of the present Rabbit Act. It would also strongly recommend the Government to itself import the wire netting and supply it to tho settlers at cost piice, with duty and railage free, or that tho settlers should be subsidised to the extent of one third of its cost." (2)" That as this meeting has requested tho Government to make alterations in tho Rabbit Act, so as to induce settlers to use wire netting, it is of opinion that the Feucing Act shonld be so amended as to make a rabbitproof fence the only legal boundary fence in proclaimed rabbitdistricts." The visitors after passing a hearty vote of thanks to the Liberal Association for the invitation to be present at the meoting, then withdrew.
Copies of the resolutions are to be forwarded to the Premier and MvA,tyHo^TO : |
