The Tariff Commission.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wf.luxgtox, Monday. The Tariff Commission opened its sittings in the Parliament Buildings, at oleven o'clock this morning, £ Major Staiyard in the Chair, and ut Messrs W. Hutchison, and Tanner being present, After the formalities, the Commission read telegrams from tho absent Commissioners, Messrs T. MeKenzie, Stevens, and McGowan. Mr MeKenzie stated that owing to the short notice, it was impossible for him to be present at the opening, but he was leaving Balclutha to-day. Mr McGowan was on the iray from Auckland, and Mr Stevens would arrive by to-day's train. Mr Duthie, tho other Commissioner, is on his way to England, The Commission adjourned till three o'clock this afternoon, when tho question of admitting the press to the will be decided. This question was informally discussed this morning, bntwas left for a final decision until s quorum was present. It was decided to advertise in tho Wellington papers, announcing that the Commission would be glad to

receive information from persons interested in the tariff, with a view to simplifying the work of the Comtt mission. The subjects on which ~ eyidence is to be taken, will heclassified, and it is assumed that the public will assist tho Commission to get its labors into order. Mrßus- - sell, of tho Hansard staff, is to act as shorthand writer to the Commission. It is thought probable, that the proceedings will be open to tho press,
