Land for Settlement
THE ARDGOWAN ESTATB TO BK TAKEN COMPULSOHILY, As land is urgently needed in the neighbourhood of Oamarii for the purposes of close settlement, the Government some time since made an offer for tin; Ardgowan estate, which adjoins the Town Jiclt on the ■western side of Oamaru. The oiler has boon declined (says the N.Z. Timi't), and (lie Government have therefore decided to take the estate under the powers contained in the Lund for Settlements Act. It is the ]iroperty of the New Zealand and Australian Laud Company, and lias an area of about 400U acres, It is good agricultural land, well suited JtL for subdivision into small sections. W This will be the first occasion for exercising the compulsory powers of the Act, Several other offers have been made by the Government for land in the Oamaru district, but this is the only instance in which a reply has been received so far.
