CORRESPONDENCE.

Jhe Half-Holiday Question. (To Tub Editor "W.D, Timks), Sir A petition is being carried round Masterton asking the Borough Council to appoint Thursday as the day for the statutory half holiday. Now that the matter has to bo delinitoly settled, would it not bo well to get the opinion of the greater number of those interested as to which would be the best day for closing? There are many reasons why Saturday should be oliosen. The Banks and solicitor's oices closo on this day, while mechanics and others also, leave work earlier on Saturday. There may be some who think that another day than cither Thursday or Saturday would be more desirable, and as it is a case where all those more directly interested shouldbeallowed to express an opinion, I suggest that a vote bo taken of the storekeepers and assistants, which could be economically done as follows; Let two men go round, hand each employer and recognised assistant a paper (votes could be kept separate if desirable); let the voter simply write on the paper the day he would wish for a holiday, and placo it in a sealed bag. The votes could be counted by a .Committee, and the whole matter settled without friction.—l am, etc., Chas. R DiXIELL.
