Tho mn.il stonmor brings news that the volcano at Ambrym in the New Hebrides, has again broken out, and the inhabitants are very anxious, although the outburst is not accom--uinicd by that sickening sensation to earthquakes. The villages which were re-occupied aftor the subsidence a month ago are again deserted, The lava is running j-Jn unbroken streams from the rents jjßiml tissues in thesidesof the nioun- * uin.and is not being spouted out of the crater as was at, first reported. The whole of the surrounding country is being covered by lava deposits. The New South Wales Land Bill. Sydney, January 8. The Minister of Lauds states that up to the end of last month he quite expeeted to pass the Land Bill through the Couiicil,biit heis now of the opinion that some very great change will have to come over the attitude of tho Council before the measure will receive its assent, except in a very mutilated form, British Politics.

A Oreat Explosion, ' (Received Jan. 8,10.30 a.m.) Perth, Jan, 8. Further particulars concerning the dynamite explosion at Freemantle, show that 522 pounds exploded. Great damage was done to property in Frcemantle, apait from °Lihe havoc to the sheds. eye witness describing the explosion states that a huge tongue of thine surmounted by a ball of fire resembling a meteor shot into the air for a distance of about 200 feet, and was visible for 14 miles, . The up-shoot of the dame was observed on board thesteamer Adelaide which was approaching Eotkess. The Captain states that he distinctly felt the shock, and from the appearance of the flame he judged that Frcemautle had been wrecked. At Eockingham, 13 miles away, the shock was felt, and at Claremontmany persons were aroused from bed. It has not yet been ascertained how the explosion occurred, but it is evident that the priming shed was not tired by accident. General Intelligence.

London, January 8. <flL The action of Victoria in wishiug causes some anxiety in commercial circles, and an increase in the tariff is inevitable if the agreement is broken. Inquiries as to the probable obligation of the colonies this year show that not more than £7OOO will be required, therefore the action of the Victorian Government is considered unjustified. Should the cable tariff be increased, it is likely to nffect the wiring of market quotations for Australian produce and mining ventures.
