CARTERTON NOTES.

(From Our Owx Cohrj;sitow;xt.) Tuesday. Mr Buchanan has received a communication from the PostmasterGeneral, stating arrangements will shortly be made for providing a Telephone Office at Clareville. The present indebtedness of the Taratahi-Cartcrton Road Board is £1550. A poll of the Matarawa ratepayers for a loan of £4OO is to be taken shortly, towards the cost of erecting a bridge over the Waiohine river. Government is to grant £IOOO and Greytown Borough will raise £2OO by subscription the estimated cost being £I6OO. Tuesday. About forty to fifty people attended the meeting at the Public School last night, to discuss the appointment of Head Teacher, and the cause of the present friction. • Mr Buchanan was specially invited to be present and explain his action iu the matter. Mr T. Proctor occupied the chair aud ruled only parents of children attending the school could take part in the meeting. Exception was taken to this by the Rev. C. Murray and MrT. Moore senior, but without avail. The following motions were carried on the motion of Mr Adam Armstrong, viz.: (1). " That this meeting hoartily supports theaction of the Committee in thoir efforts to retain Mr Kay as head master and pledges itself to render the Committee any further assistance thoy may require to have their wishes complied with." (2). " That this meeting strongly condemns the action of Mr Buchanan in departing from his written promise to tho Committee, thereby frustratingthoir expressed wishes." In support he said Mr Buchanan wrote the letter containing his promise to support Mr Kay's appointment on September 17th last.

The following resolution moved by Mr Armstrong was rejected " That it he an instruction to the Committee to prepare a precis of the present friction with tho Board, and circulate it among the various Committees and ask them to refrain from voting for clergymen and members of Parliament fur members of the Education Board." Tho Chairman was instructed to forward copies to the Board,
