Alleged Attempted Robbery and Assault.
Two mon of rough appearance, A givintr tlioir names as John %Isli and llchard Brooks, were bnßht before Jlessrs Price and Lowes, at Masterton ibis morning, on a clmvgo of assaulting and attempting to rob Tlios, Tankersley, a sheepdrover, living on the Upper Plain. Tlios. Tankersley, sworn, stated f '■hat on Thursday evening, three men accosted him in Qucon Street, near Jlr iinghes' corner, and asked him to come s,nd liavo a drink to which witness replied 11 No, I will not." Ho then heatd ono of thorn say, " Wo 11 go through him," and they then attempted to nb him, one hold- - ing his arms whilst <l, e other put > his hand into his pocket and upon finding no money there they let witness go. He revised llio two men in custody as being the ones implicated. Walsh being ft 0 man who felt his pockets. After ho was free from the men, witness at once informed the police, and was . V present at the time of their arrest. Thero were three men whon he was first accosted by them, Had not been drinking with them, and did not know them. In answer to tho Bench itituess said ho was suro it was tllAimn Walsh who felt his would not swear that tho man Brooks was the ono who hold his arms, though ho was one of the party of three who stuck him up on the street. Constablo Stewart, sworn, stat J that he was present when Tanker* complained to the police of tho attempt to assault and. rob him. Went, in company withthe Sergeant J in search of the men, and succeeded in arresting two of them at the door of the Theatre, tho complainant recognising them as two of the men who accosted him. Whon Walsh was charged with going through Tankersley's pockets he denied all knowledge of the affair. Sergeant McArdle gave corrobora- > N . tivo ovidence as to tho arrest of the accused, Both were committed for trial at tho next sitting of the Supremo Court.
