THEATRE ROYAL.
The Gourlays,
A large audience, considering the wet evening, assembled at the Theatre Royal, Maslerton, last night, when the GourlayStokes Company opened their season. The entertainment is rightly named Music, Mirth and Monody, and is bright and original, certainly mirthful, but at tho same time free from anything which might oit'eni the most fastidious. Miss Amy Gourlay fully maintains her high reputation as an actress and danseuse, and her singing was repeatedly encored. In " Caller Herrin," " Marguerite," and " Madame Du Van " she tpiitc look tho audience by storm, and in the double numbers witii Mr Wm. Gourlay had to respond to repeated encores. Mr Gourlay is described as an " eccentric " and " corkscrew" dancer, and the title certainly is a good one. From his first appearance on the stage in his comic acts, until he leaves it, everyono is convulsed, while his rendering of" The Tramp " gavo an exhibition of his ability in another line. The sketch, entitled "Ton minutes in a Chemists Shop," by the Gourlay's was really clever, and another, " Their Krsfc Appearance," evoked great enthusiasm. Mr Morton Prior, serio-comic vocalist, is a valuable addition to tho Company, and was well received, his best effort being considered by most of those present, to be the song " East and West." A Professor of Magic filled up two intervals with some skilfully earned out illusions and conjuring feats. Mr Axel Newton presided at tho piano, and the stage was arranged so well that it losta lot of its usual bare appearance. Certainly the Gourlays know their business, and we have no hesitation in saying that their entertainment is the best of its kind yet seen in Maslerton. They appear in a new programme this evening, and wo expect to see a good house; at anyrate they deserve it.
