The first day's racing in connection with the nbovo .Club was held at tho Tauherenikau yesterday, the attendance being very large. The weather was tiuo but overcast, and excessively hot. Racing throughout was interesting, some remarkably close finishes resulting. Many sporting men were of opinion that the Cup Race was the finest event of the kind ever seen in the'Wairarapa. Speculation was freely indulged in, and over £3,000 passed through the totalisator, some of the dividends being fairly large, favorites seldom getting home. of 30sovs. About H miles. Donald's g.g. Mutineer, aged, list, ' (R.Arnott) 1 K. McKenzie junr'sb.g. Kaikua aged,lo.st 131b(F.Matthews) 2 F. Pearee's br.g. Cyrus 11., aged, list 71b (F. Pearce) 3 Canute, Lord John, Captain Boison, and Iroquois, also started. At the back of the course Canute fell breaking his rider (K. McKenzie junr's) collarbone. Just in front of the stand Lord John also fell heavily and his rider (Peters) got a bad shaking. Dr Bey was present and attended both sufferers. Kaikaa now came to the front and looked like an easy winner, but Mutineer, who had been jumping well, came through and won easily. Time 2min 57sccs. Dividend £0 Bs. Trial Hack Handicap, of 25 sovs; 2nd horse 0 sovs. About 1 mile. Cr. Whiteman's ch.g. Persimmon, 3yrs, 7st3lbs (L.Hannan) 1 W. Strang's ch.g, Brooklyn, 6yrs, 7stolbs (T.Beale) 2 Cress Bros' Awatere, 4yrs, 7st 101b (J. Jackson; 3 The other starters were Miss Minnie, Waitere,lnverness,and Lady Gertrude. The field got away together, and keeping close order eutered the straight in a bunch. Persimmon made a move to the front, with Brooklyn in close attendance, the latter, however, not coming in timo, Persimmon winning by a head with half a length between second ! and third. Total 440. Ay res) 3 Porepo, Von Tempsky, ami Violence alsostavled. Senator was first in front with all the rest close up, not more than it length separating any of them. At the back of the course, after the first round | Tuhitarata, improved his position, | Porepo falling back to fourth place. Excitement now became intense as; entering the straight Tuhitarata and Arius were seen to bo gaining a slight advantage, and Senator and Violence fell back. All were under the whip, and even opposite the stand, it appeared anybody's race. The finish was so close that until | the Judge's decision was given, the people were in doubt as to who had lirst passed the post. On it being known that Tuhitarata had first caught the Judge's eye, hearty cheers were given, the win appearing a popular one, although Porepo had been the popular fancy, the others also being well backed. This position was kept right round, till entering the straight, when the Toad responded Igamely to the whip, and after a 'splendid fiuish came home a winner by half a length, Total, 571. Tho field entered the straight in open order, The Toad, Royal Tar, and Merryman being most prominent.
