SHOCKING ACCIDENT.
(ByTelegraph,—Press Association). WKsiroET, Tuesday. Mr Cosgrovo, who is captain of the j Wcstport Navals, aud also head teacher jof the State School, fired a big chnrgo ■ of powder in an old t'our-pouudcr gun formorly belonging to tho steamer Suva wrecked here sis years ago. Cosgrove and others placed the breach of the gun in the centre of the School Rescrre, the inuzzlo pomtiug upwards loaded it, and connected tho chargo with a fuse through the muzzle. It was shortly after, midnight when the fuse was lighted, and the gun at once burst in pieces, the metal flying i about in all directions, One piece struck a youth named [CharlesGreen,(ls) in the neck and shoulder, mutilating him dreadfully, and killing him instantly. Green was standing in the main street. A man named James Howard (52) had his right arm shattered by a piece of metal. The arm was amputated to-day at tho Hospital brtwecn the shoulder and elbow, but it is doubtful if Howard will pull through Paterson, formerly of Duucdin, j master of the Harbour Board dredge hud two ribs broken Several shops and houses were damaged. A hole was knocked in one of the school buildings through a brick chimney.
