TnK Public Library " nil forlorn" with its two thousand volumes of old yellow backs "all tattered and torn," carao up at the Masterton Borough Council last evening. An Advisory Committee had been appointed with a view to improvements and this Committee | wanted to know if there was money! to make them. The answer was unsatisfactory..lf there be no money to make improvements how can the Council make them ? There is a Library income of nearly £2soperannum and no money, or very little, available for books ? Is not thisa paradox ? Why should the poorest Library in the Wairarapa district have the largest income ? If the Borough Council would think out! the position and assign a reasonable proportion of its Library income to the purchaso of new books the problem might be solved. "Oh monstrous ! but one half-pennyworth of bread to this intolerable deal of i sack!" ■' Since last night's meeting we have Lad information placed at I our disposal which leads us to believe that the Council desires to ascertain the cost of making the Library effective, and is prepared to make some effort to find the necessary ways and means, either from its own resources or from the Town Lands Trust. | This looks like .a step in the right ] direction, and may eventually result ■ in muoL-needed improvement, \
